Contest to Impress: Vocal

How Competing Can Put You Ahead

Recently, we have talked about how vital competitions are for instrumentalists. This week, we’ll talk about how vocal competitions can impress colleges and help students stand out from other students.

Singers often perform in advanced choruses, musicals, and glee clubs. Additionally, there are options in extracurricular ensembles or solos. With all these opportunities, it can be hard to find the spotlight. However, vocal competitions are an extra step to show that you are different from the rest of the crowd.

Not sure where you or your student should begin? Below, we have listed some elite competitions for singers that are available to high school students.

National YoungArts Association Voice Competition

The National YoungArts Association Voice Competition is for students ages 15-18. It showcases their technique, personal style, and interpretive abilities. In addition, competitors can perform in classical, jazz, pop and singer/songwriter styles.

American Protege International Vocal Competition

The intermediate category of the American Protege International Vocal Competition is open to individuals between the ages of 15 and 17. The reward is a $300 scholarship and three performances in Carnegie Hall.

Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition

The Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. They provide over 140 annual scholarships and competition prizes. The competition features solo works by the performer for a panel of qualified judges. Finalists are awarded $250 while winners can earn awards of $2500, $2000 or $1500.
